Roslin Technologies Ltd, has achieved significant research breakthroughs and experienced notable growth in its journey to develop cellular technologies, particularly for cultivated meat production.
The company focuses on creating robust induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines from animals and developing food-safe, cost-effective scale-up packages, which is a key advancement in creating sustainable meat alternatives. Recent milestones include developing food-safe media, improving bioreactor yields, and the release of bovine cell lines.
Originally a spin-out from the Roslin Institute, Roslin Technologies has achieved continuous growth and recognition since its founding in 2017. They have secured substantial funding rounds, including an £15 million Series A round in November 2022 and additional investments since then.
The company became a tenant at Roslin Innovation Centre in 2017 when they leased six desks in the open plan office space.
Over a seven-year period the company has expanded steadily and is now recognised as an ‘anchor tenant’, located at the heart of the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush Campus.
In June 2025, Roslin Technologies moved into a bespoke lab and office area, bringing all the team together in a complete wing on the first floor.
This increased space at Roslin Innovation Centre heralds the “next evolution” for the company’s development - providing long term stability and security for embarking on their next period of growth, as well as continuing to be an active and engaging part of the Campus innovation ecosystem.
"Our recent move into larger, dedicated facilities in Roslin Innovation Centre to become an anchor tenant is a big milestone for Roslin Technologies. It feels like a long journey from our start in 2017 when we rented a few desks, to a team now numbering 26 staff as part of our plan for the growth years ahead.
“This move feels like a natural evolution of our footprint within the Easter Bush ecosystem. While the path for early-stage biotech businesses can at times be uncertain, our home within the Roslin Innovation Centre community has always been a source of satisfaction and assurance.
"Growing with other companies in an incubator space allows longer term friendships to be developed and growing pains to be shared, the proximity to high calibre scientists on Campus also continues to provide sources of inspiration from a rich local community with a wealth of knowledge."
John Clinkenbeard, Chief Operating & Financial Officer, Roslin TechnologiesThe progress and advancement of Roslin Technologies is characterised by a strong focus on sustainable food production and animal health, driven by cutting-edge biotechnology and strategic investments. Roslin Technologies has expanded its customer base globally, now serving clients in North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
The strategic direction of the company involves expanding their cell line portfolio and developing the technologies to grow cultivated meat at commercially viable cost levels.
From a commercialisation perspective, Roslin Technologies continues to serve their commercial partnerships with cultivated meat producers and major food companies across the globe from their homebase in Roslin, on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
"I am delighted to see the achievements and growth of Roslin Technologies, and in securing anchor tenant status this enables the company the opportunity to further develop and scale their capabilities to align with continued success."
Val Hughes-White, RIC & Agritech Innovation Director"The culture of Roslin Innovation Centre is one where people are willing to help with whatever challenge is next to tackle, and we have always felt highly supported. All this within what is undoubtedly a beautiful building and setting which never fails to impress our guests and visitors.
